#20 - Finding Balance After a Loss

Reluctant Executor News

Negativity seems to creep in to many aspects of our lives. This is especially true after a loss. It's hard to find positives when you're overwhelmed with grief, extra work to close the estate, and possibly family tension. Admittedly, most of my posts have been about problems that families experience. However, I was able to find a couple that cast a different light.

With all of the celebrity deaths and illness diagnoses recently, you may have missed that American's oldest living person turned 116 yesterday.

Edith Recagno Keenan Ceccarelli celebrated this milestone in California. She is just a few months younger than the oldest living person in the world, Maria Branyas of Spain.

Instead of listing all the major things that happened since 1908, over the course of her lifetime, think about all of the major things that have happened over the course of YOUR lifetime.

What are you most surprised by?

What are you most grateful for?

What do you hope to see if you are around at 116?

Remember, someday someone might be looking at your life and be amazed that you were born when Ronald Regan was president.

Being an executor can feel like a full time job, and it may pay like one too.

Each state has its own rules for executor compensation, but they generally range from 2-10% of the estate assets, plus reasonable expenses.

So if you're an executor, it's a no brainer to pay yourself, right? Not necessarily.

The compensation is usually paid out of the estate assets before distribution to heirs, and it is taxable.

If you are receiving an inheritance from the estate, you could be reducing the total amount you'll receive by taking executor compensation.

Every state and situation is different, so make sure you check what makes the most sense for you.

If you an executor and don't know where to start, I can help.
