Health Insurance Continuation

What would you do if you lost health insurance?

If your spouse recently passed away, your health insurance could drop you.

Health plans require monthly premiums. If you miss a payment, coverage ends. Many plans include a grace period, where as long as you pay all back payments within a defined timeframe, such as 90 days, you will not lose coverage.

Many spouses are on the same health plan, and their premiums are paid from one account.

My parents' premiums were auto deducted from my dad's monthly pension check. When he passed away, his pension check stopped, which also stopped the premium payments for my mom.

Even though my mom also received a pension check from the same organization, they did not automatically transfer her health insurance to her account. We were able to resolve this with a few phone calls, but coverage would have been canceled if we hadn't.

My mom was able to avoid the hassle of lapsed health coverage, but it took being proactive with something that wasn't top of mind.
